The first of NnG’s two offshore substation topsides was recently loaded onto the barge ’Louis’ by the GE-HSM consortium at HSM’s yard in Schiedam, near Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. The second topside is scheduled for loadout this coming week.

Each of the topsides is 35m long, 18m wide and 15m high and weighs less than 1,000 tonnes.

The topsides will arrive at the NnG site later this year where they will be installed onto each foundation jacket substructure. Each offshore export cable will then be installed, completing the installation of the offshore substations.

Once NnG is operational, the offshore substations will play an important role in exporting energy produced by the offshore wind farm. The offshore substation topsides include the main electrical equipment for connecting the wind farm, via the export cable, to the onshore grid.

The supply of the onshore substation and the two offshore substations, plus electrical design work, is being carried out by GE Renewable Energy’s Grid Solutions together with its consortium partner HSM Offshore BV.
